How Loving Yourself Can Be a Revolutionary Act

Hair and Makeup by Tymia Yvette

Hair and Makeup by Tymia Yvette

Amber Karnes is well aware that the body positivity movement has been co-opted by commercial campaigns designed to sell us soap and overpriced razors under the guise of developing self-esteem. But when she founded Body Positive Yoga in 2010, the concept was more about social justice than capitalism—“to make room and access for all bodies,” she says.

Hair and Makeup by Tymia Yvette

Hair and Makeup by Tymia Yvette

At the time, Karnes was halfway through a yearlong 200-hour teacher training, and the same issues kept cropping up in class: She and the other students were learning how to teach poses in a way that’s really only effective for one body type: thin and able. “I was always the person giving feedback, like, ‘Well, actually, my foot doesn’t step forward between my hands,’” Karnes tells me one August afternoon as we sat on a sun-kissed park bench overlooking the Inner Harbor in Baltimore’s Federal Hill Park, near her home. “It was like, Oh! We’re actually not learning how to teach to bodies like mine.”

In the decade since Karnes started documenting her yoga practice and sharing how-to videos for bodies like hers online, she’s made a name for herself as a teacher and retreat leader, working with other wellness disruptors, such as social justice activist and author Dianne Bondy (with whom she launched Yoga for All Training—a course for teachers who want to make their classes and studios more inclusive and equitable—in 2015) and Accessible Yoga founder and director Jivana Heyman. Karnes and Heyman started the Accessible Yoga Training School in June and launched a podcast in July. “I just was not really prepared for how meaningful it would be to so many people to see somebody in a body like theirs in a wellness or fitness context practicing yoga,” Karnes says.

Karnes has always enjoyed sharing hacks for ways she’s figured out how to modify her practice. People often think their own bodies preclude them from participating in certain poses, she says, when the reality is that any posture, when adapted the right way, can work for anyone. For example, tightening a strap around your chest to keep your flesh away from your throat in inversions allows for more spaciousness and fuller breath. This small revelation can be life-changing for students, Karnes says.

“Usually if someone has a large chest and that’s been troublesome to them in their practice, there’s this aha exclamation moment that totally changes the way they see themselves and their practice.”

The Glow Up Challenge: 41+ Experts Share Their Best Tips

eyebrows_glowupchallenge.png

21- Shape Your Eyebrows

Shaping your eyebrows can change your appearance totally and enhance your unique facial features.

Also, it defines your eyes and brings out your overall beauty.

Another cool benefit of shaping your eyebrows is it can draw attention away from the center of your face.

So if you have a big nose, shaping your brows and fill the bold spots can divert attention away from your nose.

Tymia Yvette tells us the top tricks to shape and fill eyebrows like a pro:

TymiaYvetteWikiHow.png

Since the eyebrow became such a hot topic, the trend has actually only gotten bigger since we are now restricted to only having our eyes and brows exposed. The eyebrow trend has become "fluffier". A couple of years ago, the trend was as clean as possible - now the brow no longer has to be that sharp.

An eyebrow should always be tight below, even if you choose for a less styled brow. Fluffy is at the top, not beneath the brow. If you want a more natural look, you can simply tell your brow stylist not to cut the hairs. Another way you can create full & fluffy brows is with Brow Lamination.

However, the biggest thing to remember is it is impossible to make them 100% symmetrical, they are sisters, not twins. Whether you have a brow stylist or if your grooming your own brows - try Brow mapping. Doing Mapping is important to help the brows to be as symmetrical as possible. While using a white pencil, create five lines:

  • At the start of the bulb or head of brow

  • The top of the onset to the arch

  • From the arch to the tail

  • At the bottom of the onset to the arch

  • From the arch to the tail.

Finally, connect all 5 lines and clean up the hairs outside of the white lines. For less daily maintenance, try brow henna for fuller and darker (or stained) brows.

Maryland Weddings - Borrowed & Blue Featured Makeup Artist

My work was recently featured on Borrowed & Blue for my bridal client Rachel.  Rachel wanted me to create a romantic look for her wedding day.  Seeing that Rachel’s best features are her eyes, I wanted her makeup to emphasize this area of her face.  I first applied voluminous Novalash Extensions a few days before the wedding so that Rachel’s eyes would really pop. In fact, I, myself am a certified Novalash Extensionist and if you are interested in learning more about the process, please click here.  In order to achieve the look I envisioned for Rachel on her wedding day, I decided to create an ombré' smokey eye. I started by adding a soft highlight in the inner corner of the eye using MAC's loose pigment in vanillahttp://www.maccosmetics.com/ product/13848/372/Products/ Makeup/Face/Multi-Use/Pigment? gclid= CLzs9eL6iNQCFcW3wAodnaYMzg& gclsrc=aw.ds#/shade/Vanilla_. This technique helped open up her eyes. Moreover, I used Anastasia brow pencilhttp://www.sephora.com/brow- definer-P404827?skuId=1790591& om_mmc=ppc-GG_381463959_ 27499852839_pla-178167848199_ 1790591_97594828119_9012019_c& country_switch=us&lang=en& gclid= CLGnuvD6iNQCFQQxaQodRh8Hiw& gclsrc=aw.ds to structure her brows and give them a more full look. In order to soften and fill the brow, I used NYX eyeshadow powder. After perfecting the brows, I then applied airbrush foundation and Mac Skinfinish powders to soften the face and give it a more blended look. In keeping the main focus on her eyes, I added a simple hint of color and plump to her lips by using (product for lips).

Baltimore Weddings - Carats & Cake Featured Makeup Artist

My bridal makeup was featured on Carats and Cake for my client Brittany's outdoor wedding.  Brittany wanted a modern yet simple look. We decided the main focus of the wedding should be on her dress.  We didn't want her makeup to compete with her gown, so I suggested a more subtle look for her wedding. We both agreed that her skin should look natural; therefore, I did not incorporate any contouring techniques and kept the use of face makeup subtle.  In order to achieve this look, I emphasized her healthy-looking skin by creating a glowy and illuminated face.  I used illuminating face moisturizer mixed with a few drops of essential oils to give the skin a dewy look.  Next, I used hourglass seamless stick foundation to further accentuate her natural glow.  I then continued to perfect the skin by using NARS radiant concealer http://www.sephora.com/ radiant-creamy-concealer- P377873?skuId=1478387&om_mmc= ppc-GG_381463959_27499876239_ pla-178165971639_1478387_ 97594835319_9012019_c&country_ switch=us&lang=en&gclid=CM- syaz3iNQCFZq3wAodDKgNKA& gclsrc=aw.ds under the eye and eyelids.  I finished by applying a sheer wash of Bobbi brown loose powder over the entire facial area.  In wanting to give the skin a little extra warmth, I added NARS orgasm blushhttp://www.narscosmetics.com/ USA/orgasm-limited-edition- orgasm-blush/0607845040699. html and NARS laguna bronzer over the final coat of powder. http://www.sephora.com/laguna- liquid-bronzer-P407629?skuId= 1805910&om_mmc=ppc-GG_ 381463959_27499876239_pla- 178165971399_1805910_ 97594835319_9012019_c&country_ switch=us&lang=en&gclid= CO30hd_3iNQCFZaEaQodDN0Nfw& gclsrc=aw.ds  Finally, I finished the lips with a lip stain from OCC.

Style Me Pretty Wedding Makeup + Lashes

TymiaYvetteLashExtensions.jpg

I was recently featured on Style Me Pretty for Vicki's wedding makeup. This was one of my favorite bridal looks - Celebrity Glam! Vicki was great to work with, because she trusted me and left the artistry in my hands.  Before applying makeup, I always sit down with my clients to discuss their wedding details, such as the wedding theme, wedding dress, style of the hair, etc.  After hearing Vicki’s story, I knew there were a few key components we needed to focus on so that her wedding makeup was flawless! When Vicki told me she wanted Celebrity Glam, I immediately thought of her eyes. In order to create bigger, more defined eyes, we decided to do a full installation of individual Novalash extensions 3 days before her wedding. http ://novalash.com/find/?s=Tymia+Yvette

I always recommend getting extensions 3+ days before the wedding so that your eyes have enough time to adjust.  Since I’ve been doing lashes, I have never had a bride experience any irritation or problems with the extensions.

Before applying Vicki's makeup, she asked, “Will my makeup last ALL night, even through dancing?"  This question gets asked all the time. The answer is yes!  While setting powder and finishing sprays are a necessity, for longevity I like to start from the bottom up. In order to make it last, its very important that you start with hydrating your skin.  For Vicki, I used Belif Aqua Bomb cream. http://www.belifcosmetic.com/english/product/detail.jsp?cid1=B&cid2=1&pid=ACM04891

I then primed her skin with Smashbox "Light" Primer  http://m.sephora.com/product/P191603?icid2=Similar%20Products&productId=P191603&skuId=1349976

We wanted to make sure she looked magnificent in person, but even more impeccable in photos. A simple technique I like to do is layering. Not only does it help the makeup last, it also photographs really well.  I especially like to layer powders over cream products. My go-to's for the best applications are Makeup Forever products for the eyes.  http://www.makeupforever.com/us/en-us/make-up/eyes  And Nars products for the cheeks.  http://www.narscosmetics.com/USA/cheeks

TymiaYvetteNovalash.jpg

To complete Vicki's unforgettable, celebrity glam look, I kept the intensity on her eyes and created a soft lip using a mixture of Anastasia Beverly Hills Liquid lipsticks and glosses.  http://www.anastasiabeverlyhills.com/liquid-lipstick.html

Baltimore Magazine's Featured Makeup Artist

BaltimoreBride.png

I’m so excited!  Baltimore Magazine mentioned me again!  This time I was the featured bridal makeup artist for my client, Nichole.  It feels so rewarding to see her wedding and my work published in a magazine. Even though the article was recently produced, Nichole's wedding actually took place last year in October 2015.  Before I begin to describe in detail Nichole's makeup, I just want to mention that I thought it was interesting how her timeless, classic look was almost created too soon.  This same look I created last year is on TREND NOW for 2016 & 2017 fashion, which I will further elaborate on in the next couple paragraphs.  Now how cool is it that?!? In 2015, I was able to picture or rather "forecast" the direction of where makeup was going!

Looking back, I had a lot of fun doing Nichole’s makeup.  We decided to do something different. I created a sexy and timeless look for Nichole by using shades of gold on the eyes and cheeks and airbrushing techniques for the skin. I started with her eyes, using a mix of warm, golden eyeshadows. Then I placed gold reflective glitter on top of the shadow. I wanted to emphasize Nichole’s naturally radiant skin, but I had to make sure her foundation stayed in place. We decided a "fresh face" look would work best.  Airbrushing her skin resulted in long lasting, flawless makeup.  To complete the look, I intensified her naturally radiant skin. I added in liquid illuminating highlighters and hydrated the skin with rose water spray.

TymiaYvetteMakeup.jpg
TymiaYvetteBridalMakeup.jpg
TymiaYvetteWeddingMakeup.jpg

Though Nichole's wedding took place last fall, the timeless look I created in 2015 is now all over this year's runway shows. Tommy Hilfiger premiered it BEST!  The legendary Pat McGrath showcased this same look at the Valentino 2017 show and nailed it! Just like Nichole’s makeup, Pat applied a taupe-colored cream shadow and gold glitter on the lids of Valentino's models.  You can check out the below pics from Tommy Hilfiger and Valentino.

Tommy Hilfiger 2016 - 2017

Tommy Hilfiger 2016 - 2017

Valentino 2016 - 2017

Valentino 2016 - 2017

So if you are a soon-to-bride, remember its important to choose a makeup artist that understands trend and how to create a makeup look that will be timeless.  The makeup techniques applied for Nichole's wedding resulted in an innovative look for her big day.  Not only was this "classic golden" trend relevant at Nichole's wedding, it's relevant in today's fashion world. I believe it is a trend that is here to stay.

Baltimore Magazine's GO-TO-GIRL For Lash Extensions

BaltimoreMagazine.jpg

Guess what?!  I was recently featured in Baltimore Magazine and was voted the GO-TO-GIRL for lash extensions (YES! I'm giving myself a pat on the back). Baltimore Magazine came to my studio to ask me some questions about lash extensions for their October 2016 issue. The published article was scaled down; therefore, quite a few important details were left out. But you're in luck! You can read the entire interview below.

What are eyelash extensions?

Extensions are small pieces of fiber or material cut and tapered to mimic the look and feel of real lashes.  Today lashes are composed of high grade PBT materials.  However, there are some extensionists still using acrylic extensions, which are harmful to the eyes.

Extensions come in different curl patterns, thickness and length. Different curl patterns range from:

J curl- least curl/ slightly straight

B curl- between curl/ slight curl

C curl- common curl

D curl- dramatic curl/ tightest curl

L curl- flat base with natural curl

L+ curl- flat base with tighter curl

Thickness or diameter ranges from:

0.05-0.25mm

Length ranges from:

7mm to 16mm

How long do extensions take to apply and how long do they typically last?

Extensions take 2.5 hours for new clients. During the initial consultation, we first discuss the client's extensions -curl, length and thickness.  I then walk he/she through the application process of the lashes. Once the lash application is complete, I recap with my client the extensions that were used (thickness, curl, etc).  We thoroughly discuss all after-care tips, such as not picking, pulling or twisting the lashes, daily brushing and investing in a good cleanser.  I always follow up with my clients 3 days after their appointment to make sure they are enjoying their lash extensions and if they have any further questions.

To keep lashes looking full and flirty, lash fills are required. These fills allow the technician to replace any extensions that may have shed or cycled out.  This process takes 60 to 90 minutes.  I recommend making an appointment every 3-4 weeks depending on the natural lash growth cycle.

How safe are extensions?

While there has been a lot of misrepresentation about lash extensions, the answer is NO! Lash extensions are safe with proper application.  Just like any other beauty service, you have to find someone who is qualified to do the job! Not every Lash Artist is certified, and some do not care about natural lash health.  Make sure you do your research before booking a lash appointment.  I am certified through Novalash, you can visit my link here Novalash link:

http://novalash.com/stylists/tymia-yvette/

There are many benefits to extensions.  Unlike mascara, extensions do not require daily application or removal. Irritation does not occur. Many people don't realize the stress they put on their natural lashes by using lash curlers and removing mascara daily.  Sleeping with mascara on is even worse.  Another benefit is extensions that are are applied correctly can help the growth of natural lashes.

The proper application for "lashing" is:

One extension should be attached to one individual natural lash, this is so your natural lash can CYCLE OR SHED normally. This allows lashes to stay in a healthy growth cycle.  Damage occurs when lashes are not individually isolated- ONE SINGLE EXTENSION ON ONE SINGLE NATURAL LASH (unless your doing Volume lashes which is another blog conversion). When lashes are not individually isolated, this is called EXPRESS LASHES or otherwise known as a "coat-and-drop" technique that adheres/ glues or causes large chunks of natural lashes to stick together. This process causes stress on the lash follicle and disrupts the natural growth cycle. (Have you ever seen someone's lashes that look like 2 fans sitting on the eyelids? Yep, those are Express Lashes)

Extensions that are too long and/ or too thick can cause stress on the natural lash. This is why it’s important for the lash artist to customize extensions.  He/she needs to make sure the natural lashes can support the weight of the extensions.  Your lashes should not feel uncomfortable or cause you any pain. Extensions should feel weightless.  I know I briefly mentioned maintaining lashes in the previous question, but I cannot stress the importance of properly taking care of your lashes.  It is essential to the lash retention.  Every lash artist needs to make sure their clients do not run the risk of any chronic eye problems.

Lash Cleansers that I recommend to my clients are:

1. Cleanlash by Novalash 3-in-wipes - These wipes are great for my clients who are ALWAYS on the go. Great to keep in your purse or gym bag. They remove eye makeup, clean extensionsand condition all in one.

2. Lash Fresh Clean Wash - I recommend this wash to my clients who like a more traditional cleanser.  This cleanser foams-up to clean not only the extensions but also the whole eye area. Its also great for oily eyelids.

3. Eucerin 3-in-1 Micellar Cleansing Fluid - This is not your traditional lash cleanser but my favorite. You can use it to cleanse the entire face including the lash line and eye area. Micelles water or  micelles attract dirt and oil, so it will get rid of any impurities and bacteria that are on the lash extensions. This product is free of parabens, gylcol and PEG. However, not all Micellar Cleansers are free of Gylcol and PEG, Eucerin is one of the few.

What advice do you give your clients?

The most important advice I give is take time to find a RESPONSIBLE LASH ARTIST who will give you great extensions and great results.

Style Me Pretty HoneyMoon Makeup Essentials

Whether you're honeymooning in Maldives, Costa Rica or Vegas, every woman wants to keep that "wedding-day glow.” Thankfully, Professional Baltimore Makeup Artist & Certified Eyelash Extensionist, Tymia Yvette, is sharing with us her Top 5 makeup essentials and tips for your honeymoon:

TIP 1: WAKE YOUR SKIN UP WITH MOISTURE - LAURA MERCIER ILLUMINATING TINTED MOISTURIZER is the best 2-in-1 face product. It protects your skin from harmful sun rays with SPF of 20. It's also a moisturizer with a tint of color that gives your complexion a radiant, youthful glow for that "no makeup" look.

LauraMercierMoisturizer.jpg

If your skin naturally has radiance and you dont need the extra luminosity try LAURA MERCIER OIL-FREE TINTED MOISTURIZER. This product gives you the same benefits but contains oil controlling ingredients to control shine breakthrough.

My favorite technique for applying tinted moisturizer is using your hands! The warmth from your fingertips allows for the product to blend into the skin seamlessly.

TIP 2: GET A YOUTHFUL LOOK BY CREATING A FULL, WELL SHAPED BROW.  The best way to do this is by USING ANASTASIA BROW WIZ PENCIL. No need to bring your pencil sharpener, this mechanical pencil distributes the perfect amount of product on the brow to create and define natural brows. This 2-in-1 pencil also comes with a spooley brush on the opposite end.

AnastasiaBrowWizPencil.jpg

Have trouble filling in brows? First start off by brushing the brows with the spooley, in an upward motion. Next, use the pencil to fill in any sparse areas using light pressure and hair-like strokes. Brush the product through the brows. Step back and look in the mirror to ensure brows are balanced and symmetrical. Repeat as necessary.

Tip 3: GET THE GLOW FROM NARS POWDER PRODUCTS BY BUILDING YOUR OWN PALLETTE. From the sun-kissed bronzers to the cult-favorite blushes, customizing your own nars palette allows for you to take just the essentials. Start off building your palette with a bronzer to define the face, then add in a highlighting powder to accentuate and add radiance. Finish off your palette by adding a blush that will give healthy color to your cheeks.

NarsPowderProducts.jpg

Want to pump it for a night? Add in a duo eyeshadow and brush on sheer wash of shadow by mixing the colors together.

Not sure which colors to pick?  For Fair to Medium complexions, (top, right to left) Albatross Highlighting Powder, Orgasm Blush, Alhambra Duo Eyeshadow and Laguna Bronzer. For Medium to Dark complexions, (bottom, right to left) Miss Liberty Highlighting Powder, Torrid Blush, Isolde Duo Eyeshadow and Casino Bronzer.

Tip 4: GET A BRIGHT EYED LOOK WITH SUGAR LASH MINK EXTENSIONS.

This beauty service is something that you can get done before your wedding day and will last you throughout your honeymoon. Leave your mascara at home because these extensions provide a natural full lash look. They are also double heated for amazing curl retention. Dont have time to visit your eyelash extensionist, URBAN DECAY CANNONBALL WATERPROOF MASCARA will do the trick. This mascara gives you a full, soft lash from its gel formula and wont budge even in sweat-drenched conditions.

UrbanDecayCannonball.jpg

TIP 5: GET SOFT AND SMOOTH TINTED LIPS WITH CLINIQUE'S CHUBBY STICK Whether you want full color, sheer or somewhere in the middle, there is a gloss stick for you. No need to carry lipstick, lipgloss and chapstick. This product gives you all 3 benefits in a lip product.

CliniqueChubbyStick.jpg

FINAL TIP: SLEEPING IN MAKEUP IS A BIG NO-NO.  At the end of the day you want to make sure you remove all impurities to keep skin radiant. Use NEUTROGENA NATURALS FRESH CLEANSING + MAKEUP REMOVER. It cleanses the skin without striping oils away and removes makeup all inone step. Finally, dont forget to hydrate your skin by drinking water. If you're too busy celebrating and drinking champagne, use NEUTROGENA HYDRO BOOST WATER GEL MOISTURIZER. This oil free moisturizer is a water gel formula that instantly gives your skin a boost of hydration helping your skin and complexion look supple and smooth.

Happy honeymooning!  And be sure to check out the entire article from Style Me Pretty here!

3 Classic Ways To Revive Your Makeup For A Night Out

TymiaYvetteMakeupArtist.jpg

A dramatic eye is not always created by packing on layers of eyeshadow. It can be as simple as taking a dark colored liner, even your traditional black or brown liner, and lining the top and bottom of your lid. Then take a small stiff brush or even your finger and lightly smudge out the liner. Finish it off with 2 to 3 coats of a voluminous mascara to add drama to the lashes. Step 3 is to naturally contour and highlight your face shape. This step can be done by finding the areas on the face that recede, and placing your bronzer color in those areas. You can also substitute bronzer for a face powder that's 2 shades darker than your complexion. Highlighting is all about finding the areas on the face that come forward. Lightly dust a highlighting powder to make these areas more prominent. You can even use an eyeshadow! An eyeshadow that is an earth tone with some shimmer that is medium to light in color will do the trick.  Check out the entire blog post on She Knows here!

6 Decades Making A Retro Beauty Comeback

TymiaYvetteContouring.jpg

A few days ago I was featured on She Knows blog for the second time.  The post is about 6 Decades Making a Retro Beauty Comeback, where I discuss a few makeup tips from the 80s.  While most bold and bright 80s makeup trends are user-friendly, in order to bring those trends to 2015, it's important to soften the harsh 80s styles with a single timeless trick: BLENDING. Yes, blending is one technique that can make or break your makeup (besides wearing the wrong foundation color). Reminiscent of Cyndi Lauper and David Bowie, racing stripes of blush and bronzer were all the rage. Fast-forward to today- having a WELL BLENDED contour application has become a MUST. Creating a blended and sculpted look for the face with bronzer and light reflective powders is making headlines while blush, which is still popular, has taken a back seat.

How to Apply Flawless False Eyelashes

TymiaYvetteFalseEyelashes.jpg

I am excited to announce I am featured on StyleMePretty's blog once again!  This time you'll read about my tips and tricks on how to apply flawless false lashes.  On your wedding day, mascara may simply not be enough. When all eyes are on you, why not say "I do" to false lashes! Some great lash looks to consider for your wedding day are: Shu Uemura False Eyelashes Smoky Layers, Sephora Collection False Eyelashes Mainstay, MAC Cosmetics 20 Lash, ARDELL Demi Wispies Natural Multipack, NARS Eyelashes Numero 7 and NARS Eyelashes Numero 8 and Femme Fatale Designer Mink Lashes. NARS Numero 8 Bottom Falsies pronounce those lower lashes and are my go-to when completing the overall eye look. My tip: Bottom lashes help to add an unexpected detail that photographs wonderfully. Click here to purchase.

The best option for false lashes are Novalash Individual Eyelash Extensions. Wonder why the Kardashians’ lashes always look so full and long? They wear eyelash extensions. Novalash Eyelash extensions are synthetic or minx strands of hair that are bonded and individually applied to a single eyelash.  The extensions are semi-permanent, lasting up to 3 to 4 weeks. The bonding adhesive is even waterproof. You can sleep, swim, and wake up every morning on your honeymoon and still have that wow factor without adding a drop of mascara. In order to achieve this look, you want to ensure your false lashes are applied by a certified lash extensionist. But look no further, because yours truly recently became certified as a Novalash Lash Extensionist.  To find out more or to book your appointment, click here

If you would like to apply falsies yourself, below is a step-by-step guide to achieve these perfect false lashes.

Step One

Pick the right lash (check out the best below). When choosing lashes, make sure they fit your eye shape. You want lashes that won’t over-power your eyes nor will disappear—the right false lash will enhance your eye shape.

Step Two

After gently removing the lashes from packaging, place the inner corner of the lashes on the inner corner of your lash line. Check to see if there is excess lash.

Step Three

Remove the lash from the eye area and cut off any excess with small sanitized scissors.

Step Four

Hold the band of the lash and bend it into an arch shape for 10 to 15 seconds.

Step Five

Apply adhesive directly to the band of the lash in a thin strip, placing slightly more on both edges of the lash. Let the glue dry for 10-15 seconds. DUO Lash Adhesive is a great water-proof glue that doesn’t irritate the eyes and it comes in an easy-to-use squeeze tube. It goes on white, but dries clear but there is also a black tinted glue. However, DUO does contain latex; if you have a latex allergy try Revlon Precision Dark Lash Adhesive. It has all the same benefits of DUO, but is latex-free.

Step Six

Apply the lash from outer edge to inner edge, close to the lash line, above the natural lashes. Be mindful to not place the lashes too close to the inner corner of the eye or too close to the inside of nose, it may cause irritation.

Step Seven

Hold for a few seconds and press the lash into the lash line using an eye liner brush, if necessary.

Helfpul Hint: Practice applying your lashes well before your wedding day. If you find yourself struggling applying lashes with your fingers, use the Lash Applicator applicator from MAC Cosmetics. Its a tool that helps apply lashes easily and precisely.

How To Choose The RIGHT Foundation That Works For You!

I ABSOLUTELY LOVE stores like Sephora and Ulta- it's my candy store for beauty products.  I always go in with an agenda of what I'm planning to purchase. But somehow my agenda is thrown out the window because I get sucked in by these huge visuals that say things like "INTRODUCING A BREAKTHROUGH FORMULA OF FOUNDATION". Fast forward about an hour later, I've racked up a bill of $100+ all because I'm constantly chasing that high of - WHAT IS THE BEST FOUNDATION!?!? And once I get these foundations home, I may use them once or twice but eventually I'll toss them to the side because they aren't meeting my needs or wants.

I've realized foundation shopping can be difficult and overwhelming. Mainly because there are thousands of brands that all claim to have "the best foundation".  When people ask the question, "WHAT FOUNDATION DO YOU THINK I SHOULD USE", it takes me so long to answer because I have to become a CSI detective and ask a series of questions to recommend a foundation. Foundation is not one-size-fits-all, there are so many variables to consider when choosing a foundation to ensure its customized to YOU. So here it is- your DIY guide to help you find the best foundation that is customized to your needs and wants.

Let's start with the easy stuff:

WHAT ARE YOUR SKIN CONCERNS & SKIN TYPE?? (If you didn't get a chance to read my last blog, shame on you! Go ahead, scroll down and read the blog on SKIN before you continue reading this one). Since you already know your skin type and concerns, it will be easy for you to answer the next question-HOW DO YOU WANT YOUR SKIN TO LOOK??? Meaning, once you have applied your foundation, what finish or pay-off do you want your skin to have?? Think of the  finishes that you have when choosing paint for your walls at home. Paint finishes come in flat, eggshell, semi-gloss and gloss. Each paint finish or texture gives a different type of look to your walls. It's the same concept for foundation finishes or looks - Matte, Natural-Matte, Natural, Natural-Satin or Satin.

MATTE

  •  no shine/ flat
  • looks powdery or velvety
  • skin will not reflect light
MATTE FINISH

MATTE FINISH

Natural-Matte

  • similar to matte but has a slight shine
NATURAL-MATTE FINISH

NATURAL-MATTE FINISH

NATURAL

  • combination of shine and no shine
  • looks like regular skin/ real skin
  •  "no makeup" look
NATURAL FINISH

NATURAL FINISH

Natural-Satin

  • similar to natural but has a slight shine
NATURAL-SATIN FINISH

NATURAL-SATIN FINISH

Satin

  • shine
  • looks dewy or glowy
  • skin will reflect light

Once you figure out the "look" you want your skin to have, next you have to figure out HOW MUCH COVERAGE YOU WANT! Meaning how little or how much of your natural skin do you want to show through the foundation? Sheer, sheer-to-meduim, medium, medium-to-full, or full-coverage are your options. Think of coverage like hosiery- sheer pantyhose, opaque tights, or leggings (and I know what you're thinking - but YES, leggings are apart of the "hoisery" family, not the "pant" family).

Sheer

  •  see-through, barely there, a "veil"
SHEER COVERAGE

SHEER COVERAGE

Sheer-to-Medium

  • covers slightly more than sheer
SHEER-TO-MEDIUM COVERAGE

SHEER-TO-MEDIUM COVERAGE

Medium

  • in-between sheer and full, hides some imperfections but some skin still shows through
MEDIUM COVERAGE

MEDIUM COVERAGE

Medium-to-full

  • covers slightly more than medium
MEDIUM-TO-FULL COVERAGE

MEDIUM-TO-FULL COVERAGE

Full

  • completely covered, can not see through
FULL COVERAGE

FULL COVERAGE

By now you should know how much coverage you want your foundation to have.  Now, lets talk about foundation formulas: liquid, cream or powder. When choosing a formula, its a personal preference.

  • Liquids - come in different consistencies from watery, thin liquids to dense/ thick gel-like textures.
  • Creams - creamy, smooth in consistency. Some creams come in a light moose texture to a cake texture.
  • Powder - Powder foundations will either come in a pressed compact or loose form.

Concealers and setting powders?? Both products are optional. Concealers are great if you want to add more or less coverage in certain areas of the face. For example, you may want full coverage for the face, but something a little more sheer for under the eye. Or maybe you want a sheer foundation but you need a full coverage concealer to cover a blemish.

Setting powders are also great to add into your foundation routine. Setting powders usually have one or more benefits-

  • use all over or in certain areas to add more coverage to foundation
  • touch up foundation
  • help longevity and durability of foundation
  • control shine

(At this point, I'm sure you're wondering if I will touch on one of the more popular makeup techniques that is happening today - highlighting and contouring. YES! My next blog will be about using concealers to HIGHLIGHT &  cancel-out unwanted discoloration and how to use powders to HIGHLIGHT & CONTOUR).

So we have finally reached the most difficult part of the process, finding the perfect shade of foundation. I purposely made this part of this process last because if you're not savvy at color matching or understanding undertones, you may want to leave this part to the professionals. But if you are at your local target with no professionals around, I want you to know what to look for. Now unless you are an alien, the average person will have undertones that are-

  • Warm - think rosey/red
  • Cool - think golden/yellow
  • Neutral - an equal balance of rosy and golden undertones
WARM UNDERTONE

WARM UNDERTONE

COOL UNDERTONE

COOL UNDERTONE

NEUTRAL UNDERTONE

NEUTRAL UNDERTONE

Now, every brand has their own system that indicates the depth (lightness to darkness) of their foundation colors. So once you figure out your undertone, next you need to figure out the depth of your complexion. You will fall within the following catogories:

  • Fair
  • Light
  • Medium
  • Dark
  • Deep-dark
HOW LIGHT OR DARK IS YOUR COMPLEXION?

HOW LIGHT OR DARK IS YOUR COMPLEXION?

After figuring out your category, pick 2 or 3 colors that look closest to your complexion. If you are in a cosmetic store, ask one of the makeup artist to do a color/ shade match for you directly on your face. Can you use the back of your hand or the inside of your wrist?? NO!!! Your hand and wrist are usually a different color than the skin on your face, so you don't want to run the risk of getting a color that is too light or too dark. Swatch the 2 or 3 colors, side by side, from the center of the face to the jaw-line. The foundation that looks "invisible" or "disappears" will probably be the best match. Some women tan everything but their face, you can color swatch directly on the neck for foundation to match the neck and décolleté area. If you can't make a decision while you're in the store, ask for a sample of all 3 colors, take them home and try them on in natural lighting to see which color looks best. Now, if you are doing foundation shopping at your local superstore like Walmart, follow the same process as listed above. Since you can't take home samples (that would be called stealing!) or try it on in the store, my suggestion is to buy the colors that look closest to your complexion. Try them at home and return the ones that don't work.

COLOR SWACTH 3 FOUNDATION COLORS

COLOR SWACTH 3 FOUNDATION COLORS

The one thing you MUST keep in mind are the changes your skin may go through as the seasons and weather change. For example, during the winter your skin may be dehydrated, so you may want to opt for a foundation formula that is hydrating. Fast-forward to the middle of summer when the weather is hot and humid and your skin has a higher moisture level. You may want or need to change your foundation to one that will control oil. On top of your skin conditions changing, you may be a few shades darker from being in the sun. This means the color of your foundation will also need to change to a darker shade. It's common to have 2 colors and formulas of foundation, one for summer and one for winter.

Whewww, that was ALOT! Hopefully you don't feel overwhelmed. But if you do, LET' S REVEIW-

  1. Know your skin type and concerns
  2. Figure out the "look" of foundation that you want (think of the finishes or textures of paint)
  3. Figure out how much coverage you want (think of sheer pantyhose vs leggings)
  4. Figure out the undertone ( rosey, golden or a mixture of both)
  5. Figure out the depth of your skin (how light to dark)
  6. Color Swatch (the power of 3)
  7. Purchase or sample-it-up... all of these steps = Tymia Yvette did a FABULOUS job teaching you to how to choose the right foundation that works for you...

...UNTIL NEXT TIME, HAVE FUN FOUNDATION SHOPPING XO

Skin Care: How To Pick The Best Products For Your Skin

Do you have a regular skin care routine??

Do you have a regular skin care routine??

I've been staying with my sister Monicka for the last few days and I'm noticing how overly obsessed she is with her skincare regimen. I mean she's my sister, so I've always known about her addiction but her regimen is beyond CRAZY! But watching her put on all her serums and eye creams on her already VERY flawless skin inspired me to write about that very thing -  SKIN!

My blogs are usually about the obsession I have for makeup and trend. This particular blog originally started with me writing about foundation. I wanted to write about that because I CONSTANTLY get requests from my clients saying they want their skin to look FLAWLESS and recommendations for a foundation that will give them that "no makeup" look. But how is it possible to have that Heidi Klum glow or the flawless-ness of Beyonce if you aren't taking care of your skin???

So my first question to you is, WHAT IS YOUR SKIN TYPE?  As a makeup artist, I always  hear the same 2 things, "my skin is oily" or "my skin is sensitive". What's funny about those statements is that most people really don't know what type of skin they have. But why would you, when you've never had the opportunity to learn about skin? Well for the next 5 minutes, I will be your tour guide as we navigate through skin types and common skin conditions.

Since we all have our own lovemark to certain skincare brands, I won't get into what products to buy, but I will tell you some ingredients to look for when you're purchasing skincare. Dry, oily , dehydrated, textured, sensitive, and uneven/ hyperpigmented skin are the skin types and conditions most women are concerned about (you may find your skin fits the description for more than one type). Now here's an interesting fact that everyone should know- your skin in your twenties goes through a natural exfoliation process about every 26 to 42 days. Now if you're in the "30 and over club" like myself, I have some bad news for you - that exfoliation process, also known as the "cell cycle," slows down once you hit your 30's. I know, 😳😢 depressing isn't it? So that's why it's critical to start caring for your skin now. The sun ain't getting any nicer and the air any cleaner.

Now not to pat myself on the back, but the one thing I'm good at is making skin look healthy and flawless. But once you wipe the makeup away, does your skin still look as healthy and flawless?? At this point, you're probably looking in the mirror as your reading saying-

"Is my skin oily?"

  • Oily skin has an overproduction of oil
  • Skin looks shiny
  • More susceptible to breakouts or acne

Oily skin is the most misunderstood. Oily skin can be caused by internal (genetics) and external factors (weather, skincare products, diet, etc...). Look for products that have ingredients like hylaluronic acid or glycolic acid. These products will help control oil production and maintain a balance of moisture in the skin.  However, keep in mind that oil-controlling products might cause your skin to naturally produce more oil than normal.

"I don't use moisturizer because my skin is already oily" - WRONG, believe it or not, the absence of facial moisturizer will cause your sebaceous glands to produce more oil! Two main functions your skin has is to protect and to regulate. So if you're using too many oil controlling products, there may be a possibility you're stripping your skin of its natural moisture. Therefore, skin is going to do what it is made to do-regulate and protect itself - by naturally moisturizing or producing oil. If you find this happening to you, I suggest adding in a couple products that have more hydrating ingredients (water based products) or products that say "oily to normal" in the description.

Depending on the level of dry skin, look for products that say "for dry or normal to dry skin".

Depending on the level of dry skin, look for products that say "for dry or normal to dry skin".

"Is my skin dry?"

  • dry skin lacks moisture and oil
  • skin feels dry, rough, and flaky
  • skin looks dull

The same internal and external factors that contribute to oily skin, contribute to dry skin. Look for products that contain jojoba oil, ceramides, or shea butter which will help to soften, smooth, and lock in moisture.

Look for skincare products like hydrating serums and oils-these products will help penetrate the skin deeper and lock in moisture.

Look for skincare products like hydrating serums and oils-these products will help penetrate the skin deeper and lock in moisture.

"Is my skin Dehydrated?"

  • Dehydrated skin lacks water (did you drink your 8 glasses of water today?)
  • skin feels tight
  • less supple
  • skin/ complexion looks dull

This skin condition can be caused by over exfoliating, poor diet, cold weather, smoking, exposure to sun and other environmental factors. Dehydrated skin can be both oily and dry at the same time. Look for ingredients like sodium hyaluronate (moisture magnet), squalene, and moisturizing serums. Think of serums like a primer for your moisturizer. It helps your skin to receive the maximum benefits of moisture.

Now before we move any further, lets talk about the difference between dry and dehydrated skin. Dry skin lacks natural oil production. It can be caused by genetics or using harsh products. Dehydration is the lack of water and nutrients. Some causes of dehydration may be poor nutrition, not drinking enough water, weather, stress, sickness, etc. Dry skin is a skin type, dehydrated skin is a skin condition (which means its treatable).

Look for products that say "for sensitive skin". Mineral-based skincare can also be a good option.

Look for products that say "for sensitive skin". Mineral-based skincare can also be a good option.

"Is my skin sensitive?"

  • sensitive skin has a weaker skin barrier which means you're more vulnerable to skin reactions like acne, rosacea, stinging, or an allergic reaction.

As you age your skin gets thinner, which may cause more sensitivity. Some of us are born with sensitive skin. In both cases, you should look for products that have cucumber extract, aloe, or willow bark extract. All of these ingredients will help sooth inflamed or irritated skin. Another unexpected anti-inflammatory ingreidiant is caffeine.

Look for skincare that say "even out or skin brighting". Don't forget your exfoliator and your board spectrum SPF".

Look for skincare that say "even out or skin brighting". Don't forget your exfoliator and your board spectrum SPF".

"Is my skin uneven or hyperpigmented?"

  •  hyperpigmented skin has an uneven tone
  • dark spots or age spots

This condition can be caused by genetics or environmental factors. Look for skincare that has licorice extract, retinal, vitamin C, and most importantly -ZINC OXIDE & TITANIUM DIOXIDE. YES SPF!! These ingredients will not only help to even out and brighten skin, but SPF will help to shield the skin from those ultraviolet rays to control melanin (dark spots) production.

Look for skin care that say "anti-ageing". and of course don't forget your broad spectrum protection.

Look for skin care that say "anti-ageing". and of course don't forget your broad spectrum protection.

"Is my skin textured?"

  • Textured skin is completely based on internal and external factors.
  • External factors- poor nutrition, smoking, sun exposure. These are things you can change.
  • Internal factors-completely within your genetic makeup. So if your mother has textured skin at a young age, Awww sorry boo😥, I have more bad news for you....

Exfoliation is great for textured skin along with products that contain antioxidants like Vitamin A, C and E. Moisturizers that contain sodium hylauronate acid help smooth the skin's surface. And believe it or not -SUNSCREEN😎. As AWESOME as the sun is, its the #1 cause to premature aging, aka unwanted texture.

If your skin is normal, you probably already have a great  routine, just keep it up:)

If your skin is normal, you probably already have a great  routine, just keep it up:)

"My skin is normal."

Well I would just call your skin ugly and stupid😠. Not really, if you have normal skin, you're a special and fortunate breed. You have a great balance of oil and moisture.

So if you're thrifty like me, you probably want to know how you can start a healthy skincare regime with out spending a fortune. My sister gave me the best and cheapest advice, "Don't skip a day without wearing SPF25 or higher, and don't forget the power of 8. Drink 8 glasses of water and get 8 hours of sleep"....to stay youthful, healthy & beautiful.

P.S. now remember, I'm just a makeup artist with only 14 years of experience so if you think you need more professional help, make an appointment with your dermatologist. But in the meantime if you have any comments, concerns, questions or need suggestions,  leave me a comment below!! XO

Back to Beauty Blogging!

Uhhhh yeaaaa! I know - I've been gone for a LOONG time. So I'm going to be completely honest with you all! I'm not a consistent blogger (as you can tell). I really don't think what I have to say about makeup or trend is all that interesting to take up 5 minutes of your life once a week or once a month. However, my web designer, Kirsten said "MIA!! You have to BLOGGGG!" So here I go;).....

There is a lot going on in the world of fashion and trend. Let me run down the list briefly since I've been gone for a while.....

Marsala-Pantone 2015 color of the year

Marsala-Pantone 2015 color of the year

We have a NEW color for 2015, (which I'm sure you already know) MARSALA! Yes we like to cook with it, I prefer to drink it. Yet overall, it is such an amazing color. When I'm looking for a color in my kit that will flatter ANY SKIN TONE, Marsala is it. It's one of my cant-go-wrong/go-to colors that is great for makeup, nails and hair.

Fall 2015 Fashion Week

Fall 2015 Fashion Week

AND YESSSS!! FASHION WEEK!! As you are reading, the models are strutting down the cat walks of NYFW A/W 2015! The Fall season of 2015 is the season of cool, earthly neutrals paired with bold color statements. We will get more into that makeup color palette in upcoming months.

And if you've visited your favorite clothing website lately (I ❤️️citychiconline for us curvy girls) you've probably noticed swimsuits or bikinis on the home page, which means it's SPRING. So even though you're probably still wearing your earmuffs and thermal long-johns, it's that time to get the Spring wardrobe together, for Makeup that is.

The classic black liner and mascara paired with minimal skin.

The classic black liner and mascara paired with minimal skin.

So the question is, what direction is the makeup trend going in for Spring 2015? Makeup has received a "downgrade" so to speak. It's an understated kind of makeup. Its no longer about trying too hard or wearing too much - that look has been passe for some seasons now. Makeup NOW is a more wearable makeup - a more lifestyle makeup. It's more acheivable (especially when we talk about technique).

Let's start by focusing on the backbone of eye makeup: black eye liner and mascara. Black eyeliner is classic, modern, and still very glam. As far as mascara - well what can I say... There is no happy-medium when it comes to putting on mascara this season. Lashes are jam-packed and fully loaded & coated with mascara.

Maybelline Great Lash & L'oreal Infallible Eyeliner

Maybelline Great Lash & L'oreal Infallible Eyeliner

Pairing this eye look with skin that has a "no makeup" type of look is key. Foundation and powder is minimal, brows are gently groomed, highlights are sheer and lips get a touch of lip balm.

Laura Mercier Oil free tinted moisturizer, NYX Tinted Brow Mascara and Rosebud Salve.

Laura Mercier Oil free tinted moisturizer, NYX Tinted Brow Mascara and Rosebud Salve.

I decided to create a similar look while pushing the envelope a bit. I created a wide-eye look by using graphic lines. To create this look, I used almost the exact same products listed above. However, I did substitute the pencil liner for Inglot's Gel liner using a MAC 210 brush. And of course nothing is complete in my life without a little sparkle and 3D glitter from MAC Cosmetics

Stay classic, modern & GLAM! XO💄💋

Is Your Makeup Wardrobe Ready For Spring & Summer 2014-Part 2

             S/S 2014 EYE & LIP TRENDS

             S/S 2014 EYE & LIP TRENDS

So I know all of you were sitting on the edge of your seat, biting your nails just dying and waiting for me to post my part 2 of S/S 2014 makeup wardrobe!! But I'm quite certain that wasn't the case. However, I am SURE the only ones who were waiting for this were my overly obessed proteges who O.D. daily on cosmetics and makeup trends (yes I'm talking about you Bri, Neen & Von). Anyway, I've been gone for so long with a pretty bad ankle sprain. Somehow that sprain SPREAD and crawled up into my fingertips which caused me not to give you guys the "need to know" for S/S 2014 eyes and lips. My deepest apologies!  However, since Memorial Day is a few days away and the first day of Summer isnt until June 21st, I figured there is still time for me to inspire my fellow makeup junkies of the world.

Create that slept-in look with the blackest BLACK eyeliner.

Create that slept-in look with the blackest BLACK eyeliner.

Ok so lets get down to business: Summer-time Eyes! In my last blog, I talked about SIMPLICITY with NUANCES. Keep that aspect in mind when you get ready to do your eye makeup. So you have on your new Lavender-colored blouse and I'm sure you're ready to pull out your MAC Beautiful Iris lavender eyeshadow (one of my faves) but this summer its not about matching your eyeshadow to your outfit. One BIG trend for eyes: show off the shape and flirtyness of the eye. So put the lavender eyeshadow back in your makeup bag and pull out black...yes BLACK.  Start with the eyeliner. It can be cream, liquid, or pencil as long as its black. You'll also need your blackest mascara. Remember those strip lashes you brought a while back - you'll need those too. YEP, its time for the FALSIES!!! However, I know you may be thinking...how is this in trend for 2014? Are makeup trends being reprocessed?? Well remember, skin is glowy and feminine; brows are not overly groomed or sculpted; there are pops of color on the cheeks and lips along with subtle shimmer to help create a light effect to the skin. This means the eyes have to be kept timeless and classic. The liner has a 90's slept-in feel to it, not goth but feminine. The lashes look "DOE-EYED", creating a very 60's lash.

Create Modern 60's eye with Tokyo bottom lashes by Lilly Lashes

Create Modern 60's eye with Tokyo bottom lashes by Lilly Lashes

A simplistic eye  doesnt mean the eyelids should be kept bare. The eyes are translucent with a natural hue. You can achieve this look by using Benefit's Creaseless Cream Eyeshadow in Peach Parfait, Venetian Brown or Butter Cream. While getting your Benefit eyeshadows, dont forget your "They're Real!" Mascara from Benefit and your Red Cherry Lashes #13 to help create that 60's lash. If you want to get that modern day Twiggy look, pop on some Tokyo bottom Lilly Lashes.

Unusal colors on the lips like pastels and coral-reds

Unusal colors on the lips like pastels and coral-reds

Now that we have your eyes in trend, lets tie it in with the oh-so-popluar lip trend we are all obsessed with. The colors have a Barbie-Doll like feel to the lips. Unusual colors like pastel  lavender and bright coral reds. The texture this season can be creamy, glossy or matte, its just all about using color in a non-traditional way. Try Flare lipstick by Illmasqua or Coral Blossom Lipstick by Tarte to accessorize your SS makeup wardrobe.

Now since I made you wait soo long for part 2, I'll give you (and only you) an exclusive sneak preview to Autum/ Winter 2014...

Usually during fall, skin is typically matte. However, this fall and winter, have it YOUR way! Whether you prefer matte or dewy, the main focus is using different textures on the skin to create a 3-D, realistic look. And guess what??? Contours are added back in a big way (not that they ever really went away). A/W 2014 has a strong focus on EYES. The "windows to the soul" will have a architecturally strong, glam-grunge look which will be complimented with the return of *drum roll please* a strong brow....all pulled together in a modern way.

Do I have you hooked yet?!?! Want to know the other trends??? Stay tuned for A/W 2014 MAKEUP Trends and I PROMISE I wont stay away as long XO💋💄.
